All visual sources and quotations must be cited on the exhibit board AND in the annotated bibliography!
When you use visual sources (pictures, videos, etc.) and quotations, you must credit your sources with a brief citation directly on the exhibit, as well as a more complete citation in your annotated bibliography. Brief citations on the exhibit do NOT count toward your total word count. This is one of the most commonly forgotten parts to the National History Day project. So please don't forget it!
Citing/Crediting Quotations:
Quotations should be cited directly on the exhibit with the author/speaker, the title of the source (Where the quote was published or found), and a date of when the quote was spoken or published (when available). An example would be:
“There is danger…they have still far to go. It is for the Woman’s Party to decide whether there is any way in which it can serve in the struggle which lies ahead to remove the remaining forms of woman’s subordination” (Alice Paul, The Suffragist, 1921) The quote will also need to be cited in more detail in the annotated bibliography.
Visual sources are cited in a similar manner to quotations. You want to mention the content (who/what is in the picture), give a date if available (When was the photo taken), and the source (Where YOU found the image). Please note that Google and other search engines are NOT viable sources. Saying that you got your picture from Google is like saying that you got a quote from the library. Just like you need to tell us which book your quote came from in the library, you also need to tell us which website made this image available to you.
Counting Words:
Word requirements vary by project type. Exhibit: 500 maximum Website: 1,200 maximum (Visible words) Paper: 1,500 minimum to 2,500 maximum Performance: 10 minute time limit Documentary: 10 minute time limit Process paper: 500 maximum
Use the graphic below to help determine how many student composed are on your project. Remember all titles, subtitles, etc. also count towards your total word count.
